Attributes of Successionally Stable Even-aged Oak Stands

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Oak-dominated forests of the Central and Eastern United States have generally not been regarded as suited to uneven-aged silviculture (Roach and Gingrich 1968, Sander and Clark 1971). In fact, several attempts to apply the selection method of reproduction cutting in oak-dominated stands have resulted in compositional shifts toward more shade tolerant species (Trimble 1970). Given these results, one might legitimately ask why conversion of these stands to an uneven-aged structure would be attempted, if maintenance of a dominant oak component were an objective of management.

Structural Attributes of Two Old-Growth Cross Timbers Stands in Western Arkansas
—Comprised of largely non-commercial, xeric, oak-dominated forests, the Cross Timbers in Arkansas have been heavily altered over the last two centuries, and thus only scattered parcels of old-growth timber remain. We inventoried and mapped two such stands on Fort Chaffee Military Training Center in Sebastian County, Arkansas. The west-facing Christmas Knob site is located on an isolated hill, w...
متن کاملEfficacy and Associated Factors of Even- and Uneven-Aged Management to Promote Oak Regeneration in the Missouri Ozarks
Oak regeneration problems have been noted in the Missouri Ozarks and elsewhere in the eastern United States. Alteration of disturbance regimes, competition from nonoak species, and high overstory stocking are believed to be major barriers that impede oak regeneration. We studied regeneration in upland oak forests that were harvested by both even-aged (clearcutting) and uneven-aged (single-tree ...
متن کاملRespiratory carbon losses in a managed oak forest ecosystem
Respiratory carbon losses from a mixed oak forest ecosystem following experimental manipulations were examined for their magnitudes and biophysical regulations. To quantify these losses, respiration measurements from chamber-based ecosystem components of sapwood, snags, down-logs, and soil, using chamber-based methods, were collected from experimental stands 8 yr after the manipulations of: non...
متن کاملSoil Properties in 35 y old Pine and Hardwood Plantations after Conversion from Mixed Pine-hardwood Forest
—Past management practices have changed much of the native mixed pinehardwood forests on upland alluvial terraces of the western Gulf Coastal Plain to either pine monocultures or hardwood (angiosperm) stands. Changes in dominant tree species can alter soil chemical, biological, and physical properties and processes, thereby changing soil attributes, and ultimately, soil functions. Restoring the...
متن کاملVariability of soil chemical characteristics in Oak stands with different dieback
Determination of soil chemical properties variability that affected tree tolerance to stresses can help to manage this environmental phenomenon. In this investigation, for detection of this variation trend, area of affected decline oak trees divided to four groups of control (without Oak decline), slight, middle and severe Oak decline based on tree and branch number per soil surface unit. In ea...
